British motor-racing team and manufacturer;
the first winners of the Constructors'
Championship 1958. The company was started by
Tony Vandervell and it launched its first car
1954. It was designed around a Ferrari
chassis with a Norton engine. Stirling Moss
drove for Vanwall and won the 1956
International Trophy. In 1957 Moss and Tony
Brooks shared the driving to win the British
Grand Prix at Aintree, the first win for a
British car in over 30 years. They went on to
win six Grand Prix 1958. In 1959, ill health
forced Vandervell to retire and, at the same
time, the team quit Formula One racing.
